Donald Trump first floated buying the island from Denmark in 2019, then returned to it in 2025 as a security demand, arguing that control of the Arctic requires American ownership. Denmark refuses. Greenland's own government, self-governing since 1979 and host to a US airbase since 1951, says the island is not for sale to anyone. The European Union has lined up behind Copenhagen. NATO was built to face threats from outside the alliance.
Its members now include one pressing a territorial claim against another.
The EU Commission president's Strasbourg invitation for Canada to become the bloc's first associate member is the most consequential institutional development in the dispute since Trump's annexation map triggered Iceland's formal rebuke.
The offer has no treaty basis and drew pushback from member states, but it gives Canada's prime minister a concrete institutional vehicle for the unique alliance he publicly sought, binding Ottawa to EU frameworks without full accession machinery.
