Israel

The Army That Cannot Close

June 2026

The Read

Israel has never held more military dominance over its neighbors, or less ability to bank it. The patron that multiplies its power is pulling away as Europe hardens into law.

Israel can flatten any target in its neighborhood and convert almost none of it into lasting advantage, the same wall its 2006 Lebanon war hit.

The American alliance that doubles Israel's reach is cracking, with Washington now treating Israeli spying on its own Iran negotiators as a graver threat than any other ally poses.

Europe has crossed from condemnation into law, and French criminal proceedings plus live EU sanctions are constraints Netanyahu's coalition cannot lift.

The April ceasefire has collapsed in all but name. Iran has resumed direct ballistic missile fire on northern Israel for the first time since the spring, Israel has answered with strikes back into Iran and nearly 3,500 hits on Lebanon, and Washington has opened an alliance rift over Israeli surveillance of its own negotiators.
